My dog has fleas?? What’s a way we can get rid of them?
Okay, so a couple nights ago I gave both of my miniature German schnauzers a bath and saw fleas and black flakes come off of them (a few but not a lot). So I told my dad and my whole family vacuumed the carpets in every room, gave the dogs two baths this week, and have been brushing them. But my oldest dog (Abby, she is 3) is still itching (mostly her beard)! Teddy (he’s 1) is also but just not as bad. So watch should me and my family do? (They went to the groomers about a month ago so their fur isn’t long, only their beard)
You gave them two baths, were they flea baths? Are they on any monthly preventatives?
Their itching can be a sign of multiple things. It could be that they still has fleas (or allergies), but more likely the areas that the fleas bit them are still itchy. Lots of dogs get flea allergy dermatitis, which is similar to when we get eczema. Even if fleas are no longer present, scratching may persist.
Check your dogs over again, either with a flea comb or your fingers. (They like to hide out in the sanitary area, that spot between their hind legs with less fur, and that is usually the easiest place to find them.)
If you don’t see anymore fleas, then you’ll just want to treat the itching. Oatmeal spray is good if you aren’t looking to give them another bath. If you don’t mind bathing, I would recommend an Oatmeal shampoo to soothe the skin followed by a good conditioner to help remoisturize their skin. My favorite Oatmeal Shampoo brand is Fresh N Clean, and my favorite conditioner hands down is Furminator. (Furminator is billed as a low shed treatment, but it is also hands down the most moisturizing dog conditioner on the market. It’s amazing!) If you aren’t up to another bath, an oatmeal spray may help relieve the itching.
If you do find fleas, DO NOT DO ANOTHER FLEA BATH! Flea baths are extremely irritating to the skin, one is more than enough. Sadly, flea baths don’t usually kill all the fleas anyway. Fleas can hide out inside the ears and the rectum, both places where flea shampoo cannot go. I would call your vet and see if you can get one of the two following pills. Capstar is a one time dose that kills all the fleas present on the dog within 15 minutes. It protects them for 24 hours afterwards so you have time to get a preventative on there, as well as clean up the house. Comfortis is an oral monthly preventative which also kills all fleas present within 24 hours.
Getting rid of the fleas is the tricky part. The black flakes are flea dirt (poop). If you noticed the flakes coming off, they have most likely had the fleas for a little while. This means that they are most likely in the house. The trickiest part is getting them out of the house, since if you don’t kill all the fleas (and their eggs) that hide in the house your pups will get them right back. I usually recommend a fogger or smoke machine, but if you can’t get away from the house for a weekend Sentry carpet sprays are good too. Just vacuuming won’t get rid of the fleas in your home.
